Charles River Center on the Charles River

August 24, 2016/in Kayaking

To Aspire (v): to direct one’s hopes or ambitions toward achieving something – a fitting name for this strong program within the Charles River Center. This fun and ambitious Aspire group came with their sandals and suits ready to engage in the challenge of kayaking and achieve their ambitions. Kelly Atkins, Family Support Program Director commented: “my favorite part was seeing our whole group participate in the SAME activity.” To paraphrase: “so often our group members participate in activities based on their abilities and we don’t all get to experience the same thing at the same time. It was great to be able to paddle together and socialize with one another.”

We’re so glad we could achieve our aspirations too: providing access to life-transforming adventures to everyone!

“Steering My Way Toward Boating Accessibility” by Bob Hachey

August 19, 2016/in Achievements, Kayaking, Open Enrollment, Past Programs, Support

Read below for one man’s take on steering a kayak for the first time. Bob Hachey is a member of the Bay State Council of the Blind and has always paddled in the front of a two-person kayak. The day he recounts below was his first kayaking program with Waypoint in 2015 when he finally had the opportunity to sit in the back! The above picture is of Bob and his paddle-partner Andrea taken in 2016 on the Charles River where Bob is practicing his new-found skill for steering despite being totally blind.

From BayLines Fall 2015 Newsletter for Bay State Council of the Blind:

On a perfect July day, I embarked upon a kayaking trip with an organization called Waypoint Adventure. The boats were launched into the Charles River in my home town of Waltham. I had been on many kayak trips before and was looking forward to a relaxing time out on the water, and, perhaps a bit of power kayaking.

But this trip went far beyond my expectations. My usual trips consisted of one to two hour treks through various waterways. But something felt different right from the start on this day. Others on the trip included four persons with a variety of disabilities and a number of volunteers as well as two representatives of Waypoint Adventure. The organizers asked all of us to introduce ourselves, lead the group in a stretching exercise, and tell the group what we might like to learn about kayaking on this date. I latched onto the third of these requests. All of my time spent in a two-person kayak was spent at the front of the kayak as a power paddler. The person in the back does the steering and I’d always wanted to learn how to steer a kayak. Upon mentioning this during my introduction, I was happy to hear encouragement from the trip organizers. One of them came up behind me with a paddle with a couple of unusual tactile markings which made it very easy for me to be sure that my paddle would always be in the optimal position for best results. This was something new for me as keeping the paddle in the correct position had always been a bit of a struggle. He then showed me in detail two methods for steering a kayak. At first, I said that maybe I should let my sighted volunteer steer until we got out into open water, but he assured me that I could steer the boat right from the start.

So, off we went. I was surprised how easily I caught on to steering the boat. After I got comfortable steering the boat, they asked me to try to follow one of the other kayaks by listening to the sound of the person’s voice. At first, this was difficult; it seemed like I was not able to turn the boat quickly enough to stay on track. But after a bit of trial and error, I was able to follow the boat just by listening to the voice. I was never told when the other boat was going to turn. Within one hour, I actually mastered the art of steering a kayak! At one point, we all gathered in the middle of the river and the organizers demonstrated how to roll the kayak without falling out and how to recover if you do fall out of a tipping kayak. On the way back to our launch point, I did get in a bit of power kayaking.

From now on, when I go kayaking, I’m going to be sitting in the back and steering the boat with instructions from my wife or my sighted volunteer. My wife will be happy that she no longer needs to steer the boat. The next time we go out, I’ll be teaching her some of the techniques I learned that day. When I stepped out of that kayak, I felt like I was walking on air. For those of you who enjoy boating, hiking or mountain climbing, I highly recommend Waypoint Adventure.

Burlington’s Therapeutic Rec Department does the Charles

August 18, 2016/in Kayaking, Past Programs, Uncategorized

Partnerships like this one make a difference in the lives of youth and adults who are seeking to grow. The Therapeutic Recreation program at the Burlington Rec Department is all about providing opportunities for interaction, building confidence, and challenging it’s participants to grow in skill and character. Another awesome day under the sun in Waltham was a recipe for just that. It was a great morning to kayak alongside friends and participants walked away with new-found abilities and strengths. Thanks again Burlington!

Time on the Water with Assabet Valley Collaborative

July 29, 2016/in Kayaking, Latest News

There was no better way to beat the heat this week than on a kayaking program with Assabet Valley Collaborative.  Although we had participants with varying kayaking experience, all were excited to cool down on the water! Our three reminders for the day were to encourage one another, stay safe, and be cool.  We were able to do these things and more as we paddled along the Charles and talked about our waypoints for the day.

One participant’s “waypoint”, or memory from the day, was simply dipping her hand in the water as we paddled.  We always enjoy our time with Assabet Valley Collaborative and look forward to seeing them again soon!

#summerofwaypoint

July 19, 2016/in Kayaking, Latest News, Open Enrollment

We kicked off the #summerofwaypoint last week with two kayaking programs in collaboration with the DCR Universal Access Program! The first group of the summer was the Charms Collaborative. We got to see both new and old faces, looking to challenge themselves through outdoor adventure.

Our focus this summer is #summerofwaypoint. What is a “waypoint” you ask? We define it as a “symbol on a map that marks a spot on a journey.” In life a waypoint is a lesson or something you learn about yourself or your experience. At the end of each program, we ask all participants to share their waypoint from the day. We challenge our participants to reflect on their experiences on our programs and think about how adventure helps them learn something about themselves. We will be placing all of the waypoints on a large map to track the experiences of our many participants throughout the summer.

Summer of Waypoint

With the Charms Collaborative, one of the biggest waypoints of the day came from a returning participant. During her first kayaking experience last year with Waypoint, she was very anxious. It took everything she had to just get in the boat. This year, however, with the encouragement from her teachers, friends, and Waypoint staff, she was able to not only get in the boat, but paddle, participate in group games, and be a role model for others who were nervous. During our closing circle when asked what her waypoint for the day was, she said:

“Last year I was terrified, but today I was fearless!”

We hope that she will remember this feeling of accomplishment and use it to persevere through future challenges. Thank you to Charms Collaborative for a great kickoff to summer 2016! We are looking forward to what the rest of the #summerofwaypoint will bring!

A student from Charms Collaborative shows her waypoint.

Another student from Charms Collaborative shows her waypoint: “Knowing that I’m a natural at kayaking even though it was my first time.”

Leaders-in-Training Series!

July 11, 2016/in Hiking, Kayaking, Open Enrollment, Rock Climbing, Uncategorized

Leaders-In-Training Series concluded last Friday and our awesome group of leaders walked away with new friendships and real-life decision-making experience. We started with a hike in the 90 degree heat – deciding on which route to take in the Blue Hills and discussing the role a leader has in any group or team – assisting the group reach an agreed-upon goal. Thursday, we talked about the qualities of a leader and how they help – what decisions we make to ensure the group is safe, needs are met, and everyone feels supported. At the boat launch, each LIT then paired up with one of our volunteer students and made sure they were ready, safe, and having fun as we paddled in tandem kayaks. And on Friday, we revisited our goal: Learning to be leaders requires courage and the willingness to take a risk – to try something you’ve never done before. ALL LIT’s took the final challenge of rappelling off a 40 foot cliff! It was a really impactful week for everyone and Waypoint looks forward to utilizing the fabulous leadership of these LIT’s on future Open Enrollment programs!
