LIT 2019

October 23, 2019/in Backpacking, Hiking, Open Enrollment, Rock Climbing, Ropes Course, Series, Special Events, Uncategorized

It’s the third year of the Waypoint Adventure Leaders-In-Training program. Young adults with disabilities are engaging again in 2019 with real-life challenges within a supportive environment and learning goal-setting and attainment skills. This is an ENERGETIC crew and we’ve loved watching them grow already. These young leaders are going to be contributing members of their communities!

The High Ropes Course started it all off in May. Each LIT had to decide how high they wanted to swing on the Giant Swing and rose to the challenge. All while their teammates pulled them up! Everyone started meaningful friendships off on the right foot through a shared experience together.

In June, we hit the trails of Ward Reservation in Andover practicing navigation and learning water-purification skills to prepare for the September backpacking trip. We started Life Stories too, where a few people in the group share their Life Story over lunch and we take turns over the course of the series. At the end of each Life Story, we have a call and response. Group: “We hear you”; Story Teller: “I am heard”; Story Teller: “Do you accept me?”; Group: “You Belong Here!”

In July at Harold Parker State Forest, we actually had to move our adventure up a few hours and cut it short due to the 100 degree heat advisory! What a hot July! But this crew toughed it out, learned all about kayaking in small groups and then had to share what they had learned with the big group and/or their paddle partner. This brought out real-life scenarios of needing each other. And on top of that, everyone was given the challenge of attempting the wet exit! With the hot day, several people took that challenge and flipped their boat over and then did a on-the-water re-entry!

In August, the LITs REALLY had to put their leadership to the test when young kids from the community came to learn kayaking from them! We did a quick refresher in the morning and then after lunch, everyone had a job to do or a skill to teach. Once everyone was ready on land, we all went for a paddle on the Charles River in Waltham with the kids in the tandem kayaks.

In September, we had our big backpacking trip in the White Mountains. This is no ordinary camping trip! Everyone comes to a Pre-Trip Meeting to go over the packing list and what to expect and then Saturday morning, bright and early, everyone arrives and gets a BIG backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and has to take group gear and tent pieces and fit it all in their bag. We drove up to Lincoln Woods in Lincoln, NH near Loon Mountain and hiked back to the Franconia Brook tentsites to set up camp, getting caught in a brief rain shower right at the end. We cooked dinner on camp stoves, purified water from the river, told the remaining Life Stories and slept in tents. It was the first of this type of experience for many in the group! We ended with a “solo” journaling time by the river the next morning and then hiked out and drove home. What a bonding experience for everyone!

And to end it all in October, we heard from 3 adults in the community with disabilities through a panel discussion talking about what life has been like for them as they’ve worked through the in’s and out’s of transitioning into adulthood. These 3 people, Kamisha Heriveaux, Melissa Bradley, and Zach Trickett have a lot of experience when it comes to navigating employment, living situations, social situations and friendships and had good advice to share with our LITs. Parents and siblings came too and afterwards, everyone got a chance to take on one last challenge and go rock climbing at Central Rock Gym in Watertown! One of the LITs, Harry, has some extensive rock climbing experience so he got to lead the group in learning some basics about equipment and how to use it correctly to keep you safe.

Summer of “I Can”

September 9, 2019/in Kayaking, Uncategorized

The summer of “I Can” is all about discovering more. Discovering what you CAN do, what your community can do, what’s possible, and what’s fun. We’re proud to be back for another year of MA DCR Universal Access sponsored programs and are grateful to be using beautiful Walden Pond for most of them. Thank you Walden Pond State Reservation for accommodating us so wonderfully. Participants, Volunteers, and Families, you inspire us every day with your love for kayaking and appreciation for our diverse community. Check out pictures of our adventures!

“This will be the most memorable trip of the summer!” The staff at Cambridge Public School’s summer program are calling it now. “They did so much better than I ever thought possible!”… To be honest, we were surprised too! In the pouring rain, the bus arrived and every kid got off and was ready to go! Sometimes we forget that the bigger challenges are the most rewarding. Rain probably isn’t your top pick if you could pick the weather for your kayak program, but life’s surprises and a community that’s up for an adventure together create moments to never forget. We could NOT have done it too without the stellar support of volunteers from LogMeIn. Thank you all for your love of adventure and for not being afraid of a little rain 🌧. We all discovered I CAN KAYAK IN THE RAIN!

The Biggest and the Farthest!

August 13, 2019/in Uncategorized

Waypoint kayaking programs are all over the Boston area, and we have made it out to a few of the Boston Harbor Islands… but never with a group this size before! Our group of 22 people paddled almost 5 miles in the ocean! And on the way back, into the wind, against the current, they were still Still Singing in Good Spirits!

Check out pictures of our biggest ever, farthest ocean paddle to date.

One Program With Many Firsts

July 25, 2019/in Uncategorized

July 18th was a very special day. Our kayaking program at newly renovated Magazine Beach in Cambridge had some big firsts! Several new experiences and accomplishments added up to one magical night on the water. Here’s the list.

1. Lydia paddled the back of a tandem boat with a participant in the front. This was her first time! Watch her talk about her “I Can” Moment: Lydia Paddles the Back of a Tandem Boat

2. A care-taker that came with a participant had a fear of the water. But he, too, embraced the theme of discovering what you can do and chose to paddle with us. Guess who he paddled with…. Lydia! Watch him talk about overcoming his phobia: Yinka Overcame His Phobia of the Water

3. We had a dog in a boat! This service dog was admirably obedient and brave for scooching all the way down in the cockpit of the boat seat his human was in. It was Sally’s first time kayaking as well! She learned that she doesn’t need ANY specialized equipment or kayak to go again on her own!

Photo Jul 18, 7 28 21 PM

4. The Cambridge Police Department volunteered! Thank you Officer LeVecque for volunteering your time and bringing patches!

Photo Jul 18, 7 27 29 PM

Photo Jul 18, 8 11 00 PM

5. And last but not least, there’s NEVER been a bigger smile and happier-looking combo on a Waypoint program than Zach McLeod and his paddle-partner, Dave Su. Zach has the most infectious love for people and connecting with others than you’ll ever experience. (Zach’s been on Waypoint programs before, so this technically isn’t a first… but you get the idea). The McLeod’s just released a book “Hit Hard” about Zach’s football injury at age 16 and his family’s journey of letting go of what was and learning to live well with what is. You’ll read it in one sitting! Highly recommend. Buy it here.

There were so many more “Waypoint moments” on this trip. There’s just too many to mention. Check out more pictures of the program. And a shoutout to Friends of Magazine Beach, the City of Cambridge, and the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation for constructing an accessible boat launch! Waypoint was honored to have consulted on the project so that more people with disabilities can access the beauty and serenity of the water and the fun of paddling with a community. Come down to the park for an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to open the launch on Thursday, August 1st at 9:30am… right before our last Magazine Beach kayaking program of the year!

Summer of “I CAN” Kicks Off

July 19, 2019/in Kayaking

A few years ago, a woman named Kamisha came kayaking with Waypoint on the Charles River. It was a full day and the afternoon’s wind picked up making it a big challenge for everyone to get back to the dock. As she was rounding the last corner, she told a Waypoint staff, “This is great for me because this reminds me that ‘I Can!'” It was the perfect summation of what Waypoint is all about: Moments of accomplishment to remember when facing other challenges in life.

Since that time, Waypoint has been implementing research plans and handing out participant surveys and a few key outcomes keep coming to the surface… one of them? Self-Efficacy – one’s belief in their own abilities to complete a task or reach a goal. You CAN!

And this year, we’re all about that. “I Can” moments are happening on programs and it’s continuing to shape people self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-efficacy! Check out pictures of our “Summer of ‘I Can'” kick-off on Lake Cochituate in Wayland.

The First Graduating Class of LITs

March 9, 2018/in Hiking, Latest News, Open Enrollment, Past Programs, Rock Climbing, Ropes Course, Series, Snowshoeing, Special Events, Support, Uncategorized

Eleven young adults – each with such unique stories, sets of strengths and challenges, personalities, and character – graduated from the Leaders-In-Training program on March 1st. It was a “waypoint” for all – a monumental marker along their journey. Parents were beaming, siblings and friends were excited, and LITs were incredibly proud of their achievement.

But to us, it was big as well! This was no typical program! It was the first time since Waypoint opened in 2010 that we’ve put together an intentional, goal-focused, extensive series for a specific population that is “Open Enrollment” style – meaning we formed a team from the public. And it was an incredible success! There are a million good stories or times we can point to and say “THAT was a moment that he/she grew…” but the BIGGEST, most impactful outcome was belonging.

Let me set the stage: The transition from youth to adult is scary for anyone. Even with the most solid support systems, it’s easy to lose confidence in yourself, lose sight of your preferences, get confused about what decisions to make, know when to take risks, etc. And it’s precisely why transition-age youth with disabilities – who aren’t given the same opportunities to step out of their comfort zone and take on leadership roles – have the odds stacked against them.

But our theme addressed this: “Leadership” is actually all about knowing yourself. Knowing who you are deep down. When decision-making opportunities come up or there are relationships to manage, if you know yourself well, you can trust your judgement and your preferences, rely on your strengths, or ask for help. In this LIT program, the curriculum was written around “learning to be leaders,” but it turned out to be so much more about knowing yourself and being known by others. This group formed quickly into a “family” and they used this word over and over again to describe the group… “We’re a family!”

On March 1st, on the 13th floor of a Boston high-rise at Wilmington Trust, the evening celebration began. With food and drinks, a slideshow, and view of the city, each LIT was given a new name honoring the ways they were “known” within the group. Several LITs shared about what they had taken away from the experience, and all received a certificate and gift. Also in attendance were the new LITs and their families – those that have been accepted into the 2018-2019 crew! The graduating class got to shake hands and welcome in these new and excited young adults.

Check out pictures of this exciting event and some posts we’ve done along the way: LIT is in Full Swing, The Progress Report, and LIT Backpacking Trip 2017. And a huge thank you to Wilmington Trust for making this program possible!

Lastly, this could be YOU or someone you know! We’re still accepting applications for the new LIT team! Apply at www.waypointadventure.org/leadersintraining/!

Sara Frost shares about what she has learned from the LIT program… her biggest takeaway: confidence in herself!

It says "I have learned to tell myself to "think positively" There is no room for negative talk in our heads. By being an LIT, I have learned a lot about myself and my abilities. The more I learn about myself, the more confident I have become. I feel most confident when I am helping others and working as a team. I am so proud of myself, and my fellow LIT friends. I think we all look forward to more adventures our new skills and CONFIDENCE!

Next up was our Indoor Rock Climbing adventure of November 2017. This program started out a bit differently than most. Thanks to the gracious hosts at Central Rock Gym in Watertown, we held a panel discussion and all the LITs’ families joined us. On the panel were three young adults with disabilities who had leadership experience and could speak to the adulthood transition process: Melissa Bradley, Kamisha Heriveaux, and Jack Hanke. These three shared about their experiences getting jobs, finding roommates, balancing schedules, navigating relationships with parents, and gave good advice to our LITs who were working on figuring that stuff out! At the end, we all climbed together!

Our planned January “Snowshoeing” adventure turned more into an ice-hike in the 60s…. strange… but wonderful. We spent the day at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge practicing navigation, making decisions, and working together as a team.

Our last adventure was a full weekend up at The Browne Center at UNH. It was a perfect way to celebrate the culmination of hard work and personal growth. This group became a family. And no, that doesn’t just mean “they became great friends.” That means dragging gear on sleds to a yurt, burrito buffet by headlamps, a NEVER-ENDING, no-mercy Uno game, a chorus of snoring unlike anything you’ve ever heard, launching through the trees on the Flying Squirrel, trying to balance the entire group on a teeter totter, Robert hoarding the pop tarts, Zach’s mad libs, Ryan sampling the roast beef, and a heartfelt, honest, and beautiful bracelet ceremony. There’s so many memories to take away from this weekend and this series overall. But it’s the connection to purpose and investment in relationship that made weekends like this one stand out.

♦Hey Y’all♦,

Well, 2018 is off to a thrilling start! For the 7th consecutive year, Waypoint Adventure’s Winter Summit was a complete success.

On Friday (February 23rd), a group of 11 adventurers made the trek up to Crawford Notch to stay at the AMC Highland Center for two days and two nights. While up in Crawford Notch, the crew set out to hike Mt. Willard, a renowned mountain that is known for great views.

As the new, freshly-made group gathered at Waypoint before leaving for New Hampshire, the levels of excitement and nervousness were high. With the luggage and wheelchairs packed into a 15-passenger van (provided by Peter Fuller Rentals), the crew embraced the pounding rain and the call for adventure. While the drive took about 3 hours to complete, the time flew by and all nervousness evaporated.

This year, the focus of the trip was centered on one main concept: Community. A positive and thriving community is one where every individual feels safe, allowed to express themselves how they want to, and contribute to the group in their own unique way.

To hone in on this idea of community, each participant was given a rock with another participant’s name on it. They were explicitly told not tell anyone in the group what name was on the rock. Their task was to observe this person throughout the entire weekend and notice when they were being a positive and contributing member of the group. For example, a contribution could be as small as giving someone a compliment or as big as carrying someone down the mountain. Other than observing this person, they also had to carry the rock wherever they went.

On Saturday morning (February 24th), the crew got up at 6:30am to make it to an early morning breakfast.  The weather was a mere 35 degrees, but there was little wind and no rain or snow. Today was the day of the big hike. The hike up Mt. Willard.

♦Before The Hike♦

Here are some pictures leading up to the hike:

(The team prepared snacks and lunches for the big hike. Flavor-blasted goldfish, pretzels, fruit bars, and sandwiches with meat/peanut butter and jelly/hummus were some of the many options for these adventurers. )

(Lydia had a great idea on how to fold her sandwich. We all followed her lead.)

(Before we set out to climb the famous Mt. Willard, we decided to take a group photo in front of our home for the weekend. With the whole bunkhouse to ourselves, it was a perfect place to hangout, play games, chat with each other, and to take a rest. However, we came up to New Hampshire to hike! Mt. Willard, at 2,840 ft above sea level, is no easy feat, especially in the snow and with the intense mountain wind blowing through Crawford Notch.

♦On The Way Up♦

At around 10:30am, we set out on our hike up Mt. Willard. Here are some pictures on the way up:

♦At The Top♦

After a couple of hours of hard work, we made it to the top! Here are some pictures of what we saw:

(We were all pretty tired at this point; Lydia took the most relaxing approach and laid down in the snow.)

(Once we all had a moment to check out the view, it was time for a summit lunch.)

♦On The Way Down♦

Unfortunately, once you get to the top of a mountain, you have to come down eventually. After about an hour on the summit, we headed back to the Highland Center and made it back within 2 hours.

Here are some pictures on the way down:

(Steph, Steve, Tyler, and Lydia were also close at this point while they passed the old train station.)

♦Rock Ceremony♦

Once back at the bunkhouse, the crew took time to do some self-care, grab some dinner, and prepare for the night activity: the rock ceremony. Each person had the opportunity to present what name was on their rock and say what they had observed over the weekend. It was an incredible moment for everyone and there was real sense of genuine camaraderie and community-building.

Here are some photos from that event:

♦Flags♦

Along with the rocks, each team also made a flag that represented them and their unique hiking experience.

♦Final Day♦

On Sunday (February 25th), the crew woke up at 6:00am to get to an early breakfast. Due to incoming snow, we left the Highland Center around 10:00 am and arrived back at Waypoint around 1:00pm. While we were all tired from the weekend, we all agreed that it had been an incredible adventure. The trip will last in our memories for the rest of our lives. By creating an environment where all individuals felt safe, loved and challenged, quality community was built in a short period of time.

♦Final Thoughts♦

Thank you to all who were part of the planning and logistics of the Winter Summit. Thank you AMC for all that you do for us. Lastly, I am so grateful for all the participants that went on the Winter Summit. You made the experience so incredible.

Till next year everyone!
