Embracing the Unknown: Wilson’s Journey of Growth

May 3, 2024/in Achievements, Kayaking

Wilson first joined a Waypoint indoor kayaking program with his Boston Public School autism classroom at CASH back in 2022. Wilson came to the pool with curiosity, but had reservations about entering the water. Along with the encouragement from staff and peers, Wilson made the choice to step out of his comfort zone, strap on a life vest, and slowly entered the water. Timid at first, he felt most at ease when holding the hand of a staff member. As the season progressed, Wilson started to find himself reaching for someone’s hand less and less. He learned to challenge himself in the pool — at his own pace.

This year, Wilson’s class returned to Waypoint for another season of indoor kayaking. Waypoint staff framed the series with the theme of Growth: Any time we open our minds to challenge ourselves to learn a new skill, we are growing! After a quick paddle tutorial, Wilson did not just dip his toes in the water, he hopped right in the kayak, with a smile from ear to ear! It was clear to everybody at the pool that day that his confidence in the kayak had blossomed! But most importantly, it was clear to Wilson.

At Waypoint Adventure, we believe in letting folks choose their own adventure, just like Wilson did! He started with small steps and slowly cranked up his exposure to the water. Wilson proved to himself that the courage to try something new and unfamiliar – one step at a time – can lead to triumph! Wilson showed the power of starting small and building up to something great. Throughout this spring season, we are so excited to see Wilson continue to challenge himself and experience growth on his terms!

Eight Reasons Waypoint Adventure is different

January 10, 2024/in Latest News

Waypoint Adventure: Where “I can’t” becomes “I can.” Waypoint Adventure, founded in 2010, awakens youths and adults with disabilities to their willful spirit through the power of adventure. With guided, experiential programs tailored to individual needs, Waypoint provides personal growth and team triumph – as participants discover their purpose, value, strengths, and abilities.

What makes Waypoint Adventure unique can be attributed to several factors:

  1. Inclusive Approach: Waypoint Adventure is dedicated to inclusivity. They focus on creating an inclusive environment where individuals with disabilities can participate alongside their able-bodied peers, friends, and family members. This approach fosters a sense of community and promotes social integration.
  2. Wide Range of Activities: Waypoint Adventure offers a diverse range of adaptive outdoor activities. These include rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, overnight camping, cycling, cross-country skiing, and more. This variety allows participants to explore their interests and abilities in different outdoor settings.
  3. Customized Programs: Waypoint Adventure tailors its programs to meet the specific needs and abilities of participants. They work closely with individuals with disabilities to develop personalized plans that enable them to engage in adventure activities safely and comfortably.
  4. Trained Staff and Volunteers: The organization has highly trained staff and volunteers who are experienced in working with individuals with disabilities. They have the knowledge and skills to adapt activities and equipment to accommodate various needs.
  5. Focus on Empowerment: Waypoint Adventure places a strong emphasis on empowerment. Through outdoor adventures, they aim to help participants build confidence, develop new skills, and overcome challenges. This approach can have a profound impact on the self-esteem and independence of individuals with disabilities.
  6. Community Building: Waypoint Adventure’s programs foster a sense of camaraderie among participants and their families. Outdoor adventures can create lasting connections and provide opportunities for social interaction and support.
  7. Accessibility Advocacy: Beyond their programs, Waypoint Adventure is involved in advocacy efforts to promote greater accessibility in outdoor and recreational spaces. They work to remove physical and social barriers that may hinder people with disabilities from participating in outdoor activities.
  8. Collaboration: Waypoint Adventure collaborates with other organizations, schools, and community groups to expand the reach of their programs and make outdoor adventures more accessible to a broader audience. Examples include Boston Public Schools, Guild for Human Services, Project Adventure, The Trustees of Reservations, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Franciscans Children’s Hospital, and more.

Waypoint Adventure exists to help free what’s possible!

“Friendship Home” Completes Leadership Series – one participant reflects on her experience

September 28, 2023/in Achievements, Series

Kelley just finished participating in our 7-month long leadership training course (Leaders-In-Training) alongside her friends at Friendship Home. In the speech she gave at graduation, she reflected:

“I joined the group because I thought it would be fun … We did ropes, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking and backpacking. We did it all!

“I learned that I could do anything I set my mind to. I learned that having special needs does not mean I cannot do what others do. Sometimes you need to work as a team to get things done but you can do it. We should all remember this experience and be proud of our accomplishments.”

Kelley is one of 9 others that completed this adventure-learning series focused on character development, goal setting and achievement, and perseverance. Congratulations to the whole group of graduates!

Q and A with our staff

June 20, 2023/in Latest News

Our staff was recently interviewed for an “Ask the Expert” article through The Guild for Human Services on the benefits of outdoor adventure and exploration within the world of Intellectual Disability. Below are the responses from our Program Staff: Carly Steinauer, Rob Dunn, and Theresa Scott.

Can you start by providing a little bit about your mission and programs?

Waypoint Adventure’s mission is to challenge youth and adults with disabilities to discover their purpose, talents and strengths through the transforming power of adventure. We provide 11 different program types, serving individuals ages 6 and up through all seasons. We partner with schools, group homes, community groups and service agencies, and with the general public to deliver accessible adventure education experiences. Examples of goals we emphasize in our program lesson plans include things like teamwork, communication, perseverance, challenge, growth, decision making, and community among others. Our programs are made accessible through considering both cognitive and physical supports needed.

The article highlights how engaging in outdoor experiences can increase autonomy and a sense of personal agency. How do you see this growth on your trips?

At Waypoint, we like to think our trip leaders are not just tour guides, but educators. We facilitate adventure activities, but also aim to teach the skills needed to be as independent as possible in those activities. And that looks different for everyone! This allows them to be part of the adventure, not just a spectator. We encourage all participants to engage and learn to their level of comfort. We also encourage reflection as part of our programs. Often, we hear from folks that they achieved something that they initially did not think was possible for them or expressed doubt in at the beginning of a program. Here’s one concrete example of autonomy and growth we’ve seen:

o     We began working with a student with autism about four years ago when he came on a kayaking program with his school. During the first year, the student’s challenge was just to touch the boat. Over the course of four years, this student sat in a boat on land, then tolerated being in a boat on water for a few minutes, then held a paddle, and eventually, four years later, was able to sit in a boat for two hours and paddle along a river with a group.

What, in your mind, are the greatest benefits of adventuring outside for folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

The benefits that folks with disabilities experience from adventure is the same as the benefits folks without disabilities experience. The opportunity to do something outside of your comfort zone, connect with your natural surroundings, and be in community with others inevitably leads to personal growth for all individuals. Folks with IDDs simply are not often given the tools to be included in these opportunities, which is why we believe providing access is so important!

What are some barriers in the field of outdoor education that Waypoint addresses through its programming?

There’s a general lack of accessibility training/ knowledge on sites and among staff in the field at large due to lack of exposure to diverse needs. Many outdoor education programs around the world were designed with an ableist lens, and don’t provide a structure with which to include diverse learners. A small but important example of this is open ended, unstructured designs of teambuilding programs to encourage students to be in the moment. Often when in this setting, participants do not know what to expect or when to expect it. At Waypoint, we try to include elements of universal design for learning in lesson planning; for example, we start every program by reviewing a schedule of events with visual and written aids.

How do Waypoint’s programs promote teamwork and community-building among participants?

There is an aspect of teamwork and community on every Waypoint program. Sometimes it is more obvious, like the challenge of riding a tandem bicycle with a partner or paddling a tandem kayak together. Participants can experience in real time how teamwork can lead to success. One way we build community is through our opening circles that we do at the beginning of each program where each person is greeted and engages in a question of the day.

Do you have a favorite memory from one of your trips?

Yes, from this winter! Ryan C had gone skiing with us previously. He showed up for the second time feeling very nervous and doubting his ability. He started first using a ski walker, then progressed to holding a ski pole to keep balance, and finally, when he felt confident enough, he was able to hold two ski poles and ski through the course independently. You could see the sense of pride and accomplishment on Ryan’s face! It was great to see him progress from a place of doubting himself to doing something challenging, independently.

Another is working with Christian D. We know he enjoys doing outdoor activities with Waypoint, but don’t typically hear him express that on programs. After one adventure, we received this email from his Program Coordinator.

·     I wanted to share how excited Christian was with today’s session. He is a guy who just loves to be challenged and he came home saying how much he cannot wait for his next Waypoint activity.  Waypoint gives him the opportunity to try things I think no one would imagine before getting to know Christian he would be capable of. Thanks to your team for giving him the opportunity.

It’s very special when we get to see/ hear about the impact that adventures have on someone after the program is over and they go home.

Carter School Partnership

March 2, 2020/in Uncategorized

At Waypoint Adventure, we talk about the importance of community all the time. There is no better example of this than on our programs with the Carter School. The Carter School is a Boston Public School high school for students with both severe, intensive disabilities and complex health needs. Carter students and their families participated in hiking and kayaking programs last spring. Three communities came together to make these programs possible: the Carter School, the Snowden International School, and Waypoint Adventure.

All Carter students and their families were given the chance to participate on a program in the Blue Hills on one of three days dedicated to hiking. Many students from the Carter School got to hike for the first time alongside peers from another BPS school, the Snowden International School. Snowden students learned how to push and pull some of Waypoint’s specialized off road wheelchairs, so Carter School students’ family members who usually are responsible for their child’s care at home had a chance to enjoy the hike without having to do any of the pushing. We had three great hiking days full of learning mapping skills, getting to know each other, and exploring nature (including smelling skunk cabbage). Since these hikes, we have loved finding out that Snowden students continue to volunteer at the Carter School for special events, further strengthening the relationship between the two schools.

The final program of the partnership is one of the biggest Waypoint has ever run! It was a cookout and kayaking day at Hale Reservation to celebrate the end of the school year. Families were welcome to join their child for the day. We had almost 70 people on that program! Carter students and their parents and siblings all got to try kayaking on Noanet Pond with experienced Waypoint volunteers. We all had a blast trying something new together!

Check out our pictures from these programs. We feel so lucky to be able to participate in this amazing partnership, and we cannot wait to watch these communities come together again to make these programs happen this spring!

IAC Backpacking 2019

October 8, 2019/in Backpacking, Hiking, Latest News, Open Enrollment, Past Programs, Volunteer

Our annual Inclusive Adventure Club (IAC) backpacking trip was one of the best IAC programs to date. Our vision for this club is that all people regardless of ability have the opportunity to share in the costs and rewards of the experience. We recognize that the thrill of backpacking can be even more rewarding when done alongside a diverse community! So…

On September 21st, 15 adults and their packs filled with food, sleeping bags, tents, and the like, journeyed up to the White Mountains for a beautiful weekend of fall backpacking. The specific destination: Franconia Brook Campsite. S’more-making; star-gazing; bowl-licking; weird wraps (peanut butter, cheese, pepperoni, hummus, and Doritos); and games around the fire were just some of the many highlights that made for a magical trip.

Several people by the end of the weekend said that this trip made their year. It is rare when a large, new group of people can come together and work so effortlessly. Genuine adventure allows that to happen!

If you are interested in backpacking or in other inclusive adventure club adventures, please check out our IAC 2019 Flyer and sign up!

New Partnership with Riverview School!

October 8, 2019/in Kayaking, Latest News

New partnership alert! We’re working with Riverview School now! Riverview is a private boarding/day school founded in 1957 on Cape Cod for students with complex learning, language, and cognitive disabilities. We’re working with the GROW Adventure Club – students in post-high school transition  who are interested in adventure, challenges, and the outdoors. We’re thrilled by this new partnership and a new place to run programs on the Cape!

Four big adventures are planned for this school year with the goals of challenging students with new and exciting adventures, and also opening up places and opportunities they can come back to in their local community to experience again! Our kick-off to the series was this evening kayaking program, but we’re also planning a winter hiking-weekend, an outdoor rock-climbing program, and a summer camping/kayaking weekend! Check out our sunset paddle on Wequaquet Lake in Barnstable!

We were impressed by the teamwork and care for each other this community demonstrated. One pair in particular made huge strides. When they were having a lot of trouble steering their boat, they became so frustrated that they just stopped paddling all-together. The rest of the group stopped too and offered tips and advice! This pair listened well and got to calm down, and then slowly but surely, they began to keep their boat straight and work as a team without getting frustrated with each other!

On the way back to shore, one of the students said, “This was harder than I thought it was going to be and my shoulders are pretty tired, but I feel great about what I did and that we were finally able to keep the boat straight!” We love the grit this team displayed and we can’t wait to see this team grow through more “first-time” challenges and exciting adventures! Stay tuned for our Winter Hiking Weekend!

It’s A Wrap! Somerville 2019

June 12, 2019/in Hiking, Kayaking, Past Programs, Rock Climbing, Ropes Course, Schools, Series

24 Programs! Our biggest partnership ever! What an awesome year it has been with the thriving Special Education Department of Somerville Public Schools. Thanks to a Cummings Foundation grant the Somerville SPED Department received and the tireless efforts of Wellness Coordinator and friend, Caitlin Kelly, Waypoint was BACK in Somerville for the 2018-2019 school year designing and facilitating quality adventure-education programs for 19 different classes across the district. Social-Emotional Learning was happening on these programs: students immersed in problem solving scenarios, supported by the process of learning and community, and given the right to take on challenging experiences and we saw it in action – the perfect recipe for character building come to life.

These programs were not just work for us. The buy-in from teachers and administrators made this series a joy to facilitate. We even had volunteers come out on one program and come back again and again and again because of how much fun they had just being a part of these days! Shoutout to Jim Bradley, Sylvana Weinstein, and some awesome repeat groups from Definitive Cares and The Shady Hill School. This community is vibrant and excelling because of your support!

You HAVE to peruse some of the pictures below. It felt like a family photo album putting these together and laughing about ridiculous things that happened on programs and awesome students, teachers, and volunteers we met along the way.  Here are some snapshots from all of the programs we ran with Somerville during 2018-2019:

We can’t thank our site partners from Central Rock Gym, Paddle Boston – Charles River Canoe and Kayak, Kennedy School Pool, and Massachusetts DCR enough for supporting this programming. THANK YOU!

And THANK YOU to all the students for participating, and the teachers and administrators that helped coordinate transportation, get forms filled out, opened the pool, and made sure adventure programming fit seamlessly into your curriculum. We believe it’s so important and it’s encouraging to see others agree. Looking forward to next year!

Winter Summit 2019

April 1, 2019/in Backpacking, Hiking, Latest News, Open Enrollment, Special Events

Waypoint Adventure conquered Mt. Willlard for our 8th annual Winter Summit Weekend!

Filled with anticipation and excitement, the group of 9 set out for the Highland Center in legendary Crawford Notch, NH. For some, it was another chance to summit Mt. Willard. For others, it was their first experience being up in the White Mountains in winter and hiking there with new friends.

The theme for this year was this: It Matters. Throughout the weekend, group members were given the challenge of reflecting on the decisions that they made and interactions that they had with each other to determine why they matter.

On the final night together, everyone shared their favorite moments from the trip. Some things that were said were: “This was the most challenging hike I have ever done, but I feel so proud of myself for doing it!”, “I needed this. This empowered me to get out into the world.”, and “This was excellent! (coming from a participant who uses limited speech)”.

After each person shared their favorite moment, they were given a cutout piece of the map from the trail they had just hiked. With a sharpie, each person wrote their favorite part on the back of this piece and had to figure out how their pieces came together to form the whole map. Without all the pieces, the map would have been incomplete. By the end, everyone realized that all the small things can make a huge difference in our lives. They Matter.

While the summit of Mt. Willard was truly a magical and special place, the weekend was made complete through the difficult journey up and down the mountain, eating way too much food, and hanging out with quality people in the lodge (not to mention the endless games of corn hole and ping-pong to boot!).  Mt. Willard was just the icing on the cake.

But don’t take our word for it! Below are some pictures from the weekend.

We are so grateful to have such a welcoming and loving community of people come out with us every year. 2019 was a very special year and we hope to continue the tradition in 2020. Thank you to AMC YOP for extra gear and the reservation at the Highland Center, Peter Fuller Vans (shout out to Jim Cubeta!) for the van and everyone else who made this all possible.

Best Buddies; A Series Built on Trust and Accomplishment

February 27, 2019/in Past Programs, Rock Climbing, Series, Volunteer

We see it all the time, but it never gets old: Participants and their communities surprised at what they can achieve when they accept a challenge and are given support through that challenge.

Thulasi arrived for our climbing program with Best Buddies fully expecting to just watch. Her goals were social – she would just hang out with her friends from Cotting School, her new “Buddies” from Meadowbrook School, and watch others climb. But after engaging in the group activities and feeling support from her friends the option was presented to her and she changed her mind. Girded by the support of classmates and friends, Thulasi climbed to the very top!

Thulasi’s dad choked up in our closing circle. He said “I am constantly surprised by my daughter. I never thought she would climb! But seeing her at the top was a great reminder of what she is capable of.” Thulasi pushing her limits on the rock wall changed things for her dad that day. Thulasi’s confidence certainly grew, but so did the understanding of those that love and support her.

Waypoint Adventure and Best Buddies (an organization spanning 123 different cities and 14 different countries) are teaming up in 2019 for a 3-program-series designed to provide “Buddy” pairs experiences in trust building and real life challenges. Relationships that go deep are founded on trust and vulnerability and what better way to make new friends than on a challenging adventure where support is vital! Middle School pairs of students from Meadowbrook School and Cotting School were the first in this 3-program series and the kick-off was a resounding success!

We’re thrilled to be working with students like Thulasi and organizations like Best Buddies for the opportunity to break down misconceptions of abilities and barriers to access so all can experience powerful transformation!
